Compound Genetics was born in 2017 in Portland, Oregon.
It was founded by Christopher Lynch, a San Jose-born, Portland-raised cannabis breeder.
He started growing cannabis in 2006 after returning from a two-year stint in Amsterdam.
Ten years later, with a friend in Portland, Lynch founded his first brand of cannabis genetics: Tiger Trees.
About the strains they had back then, Compound's genetics wizard said: “I had a Chemdog D x Sour Diesel IBL male. We made a seed collection out of it, and that was the main project Tiger Trees worked on. After that, we move on to Compound. Tiger Trees only existed for about two years."
With the end of Tiger Trees, Lynch was ready for a new company, a new brand, and a new city.
In 2019 he founded Compound Genetics and moved to San Francisco. “I was working with Node Labs. They were basically offering to help with my breeding projects where I maximized my potential in Portland, Oregon. For the next chapter, he had to enter a bigger market. California has more growers and is the home base for cannabis on the West Coast.” Ever since, Lynch and his small team of less than five employees have been providing the tastiest weed around.

This cross of Jet Fuel Gelato and Chemdog D x Triangle Kush It is so named because most genotypes smell like typical marshmallows.
The cross of Chemdog D x Triangle Kush provides power and intense aroma while Jet Fuel Gelato tames the structure of the buds and the plant so that it adapts well to all environments.

These are the varieties that Compound Genetics have been creating since its inception.
2017-2019: Legend Orange Apricot
The first strain to put Compound on the map was Legend Orange Apricot, a strain Chris picked from a seed packet that MAC's father Capulator blessed him with in late 2016.
On how he acquired Legend Orange Apricot, Lynch says:
“Jungle Boys invited me to be at their booth at [Chalice Festival] and I ran into Capulator.
I gave him some seeds and he gave me an unreleased [Legend OG x Orange Apricot].
I asked Capulator if I could do a playback project; and gave me permission, which is quite rare in Capulator. I used the male to make a seed collection.”
Legend Orange Apricot was then used to create a whole line of hybrids that included Ice Cream Man, Purple Apricot and my favorite: Flavor Crystals.
2017-2019: Jet Fuel Gelato, Menthol
Jet Fuel Gelato, a fizzy Gelato cross, was the next big thing for Compound Genetics.
“That was when Gelato first came on the scene. He hadn't really caught on yet, and I saw the window to do something with it, give it a name. I had the cutting and ran with it. I was the first to market Gelato seeds. It had the Fuel to the name, it had a good profile; In terms of growth, it is very robust in vegetative, it had good yields.
All the varieties I crossed were fire.”
From those crosses, Lynch was able to obtain Jet Fuel Gelato and Menthol.
2019: Apples and Bananas, the total success of Compound Genetics
With their success with Gelato genetics, the Lynch and Compound name began to resonate in California. It allowed him to bond with Berner and Cookies to start collaborating.
The famous Apples and Bananas was the first collaboration between the brands. It was released in 2019 and was born from one of Compound's Jet Fuel Gelato seed collections.
“I was at MJBizCon in 2019 and met Berner at one of the events. I gave him some jars. He had Apples and Bananas, at that time it wasn't called Apples and Bananas. I created the genetics, I gave it to him and he created the marketing and the brand. It has been a pleasure working with him.”
Currently, Compound Genetics has released a full collection of Apples and Bananas seeds at the Emerald Cup in December 2021.
“I crossed Apples and Bananas with all the Cookies hits. Apples and Bananas x Pavé, Gary Payon x Apples and Bananas, Apples and Bananas x Big Face, Apples and Bananas S1, Apples and Bananas x White Runtz, all unique flavors,” said Lynch.
2021: Pavé, Big Face
With the success of Apples and Bananas, Compound Genetics and Cookies have collaborated on many more strains, including Laughing Gas, Fish Scale, Gummiez, the coveted Big Face, and the famous Pavé, a collaboration with Migos frontman Quavo. “Pavé is covered in trichomes. It's almost like white. Really strong gas profile, more like an earthy gas. It has a very unique bud structure and appearance, it's also great for hash production."
On the connection to Quavo and how the community received Pavé, Lynch shared, “I think the Quavo thing helped, but I think people liked it more because it was a really unique profile and a really unique strain overall.”
As with Apples and Bananas, Compound will make a full collection of Pavé seeds in 2022.
