Bacillus thuringiensis is a Gram positive bacteria that is used as a biological alternative to pesticide.
B. thuringiensis also occurs naturally in the intestines of caterpillars of different types of moths and butterflies.
During sporulation, many Bt strains produce protein crystals, known as δ-endotoxins, that have insecticidal properties. For this reason, Bt has been used as an insecticide.
