Vermiculite is a mineral formed by iron or magnesium silicates, from the group of micas, and is used to mix with the soil and thus achieve greater retention of water and nutrients that will later be used by plants.

The main characteristics of vermiculite are:

  • It is light and cheap.
  • Neutral pH (approx 7).
  • Inert (contains no pests or fungi).
  • Incorporated in substrates it favors good aeration and absorbs large amounts of water.

The main uses of vermiculite are:

  • As a hydroponic substrate.
  • Mixed in seedbeds to improve aeration and high water and nutrient retention capacity.
  • In the cultivation of our urban garden, in pots.
